Why I Like Bill in 2008...

No, I'm not advocating for a repeal of the 22 Amendment to bring back Bill Clinton. If we did that the Republicans would probably try to get Bush to stay in. Just imagine ANOTHER four years of Dubya - I can't even imagine another two!

To avoid another "close election" the Democrats need a candidate that will stand out and bring real credibility to the table. I'm seriously considering New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson for President in 2008.

Gov. Richardson recently gave the Democratic Radio address, and also blogged on Daily Kos about it. When I heard the address I thought to myself, "What if this man where President today?" What if instead of a radical foreign policy that seems to create more enemies and alienate our allies, we had a sensible foreign policy based on diplomacy AND strength? What if our President supported real soultions to America's energy crisis instead of misleading rhetoric and counter-productive actions?

...military power and diplomacy are not alternatives to one another, but rather are complementary sources of strength. What the Bush Administration has failed to understand is that while diplomacy without power is weak, power without diplomacy is blind.

Democrats offer real solutions that provide a new direction for America. We need a new realism in our foreign policy, which includes the following elements:

One, achieve national security through energy independence. We need a man on the moon effort to reduce our dependency on foreign oil -- go from 65-percent to 20-percent by 2015; increase fuel efficiency; invest in green buildings and fuel cells; and become the leader of the future economic engine of the world -- renewable energy, such as ethanol, solar and wind.

Two, re-build alliances and reinvigorate our allies. A far- sighted policy would have built a coalition to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Most immediately, we need an international coalition for peacekeeping in the Middle East.

Three, focus on the real dangers. Prioritize resources to fight Al Qaeda and Jihadist terrorists and the most urgent dangers, such as nuclear terrorism. That means a new strategy for success in Iraq that allows us to redeploy our troops.

Four, don't outsource our diplomacy. We need direct, face to face talks with North Korea. We should also talk directly with Iran.

Five, we need to pay attention to Latin America, our own back yard. The key is passing a comprehensive immigration plan now that includes enhanced border security, a path to legalization for the 11 million immigrants already here, and sanctions against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. The House should stop holding these silly hearings. Mr. President, your good words on immigration should be followed by deeds to pass a comprehensive plan.

Six, face up to global environmental threats. The first thing this Administration did was reject the Kyoto Treaty. America should be the world's leader, and that means owning up to grave environmental dangers, such as global warming.

Finally, respect human rights and American values. Prisoner abuse, torture, secret prisons and evasion of the Geneva Accords should have no place in our foreign policy.

Every American wants safety and security. We can continue to wait for Republicans in Washington to lead. Or we can make a change.

We are Democrats and we stand for diplomacy NOT threats; bridges NOT walls; alliances NOT isolation.

- Democratic Radio Address: Gov. Richardson

Some Democrats will probably consider Bill Richardson too centrist, but I see him as a Howard Dean-style centrist. He is looking for policies that will actually work, regardless of ideology. Like Howard Dean, he has a record of being a sensible Governor and unlike Dean he has an unassailable Foreign policy resume. While not being quite as anti-Iraq war as Dean early on, he has come to the conclusion that even Hillary Clinton recently came to: it is time to begin troop redeployment out of Iraq.

His connection to the DLC (Democratic Leadership Council) does put me off a bit, but as long as he is willing to work with the populist progressives that will be in control of the Democratic Party after 2006 I think he will do fine. The real power we need to push a social progressive and economic progressive reform agenda is the Congress, and fiscal responsibility isn't really a bad thing either. We need to reign in our out of control deficit spending.

Besides, the current darling of the populist progressives (myself included) is Al Gore - also a member of the DLC. I have accepted the fact Al isn't running in '08, and perhaps it is best we field a new candidate anyway.

It is way too early to make a firm choice yet, and I'm much more concerned about what we can do this year. Still, in the back of my mind a list is forming for who I could support in the 2007-2008 Presidential primary season, and right now Bill Richardson is at the top.

NPR Poll: America says, "Throw the Republi-bums Out!"

According to a poll taken by NPR, in the 50 most competitve Congressional races the people want to clean house.

  • In 2004, these districts went for Republicans by 12 points but now voters favor the Democrat by about 6 points—a huge swing.
  • On "values issues" that the Republicans have cynically been pushing in Congress—like stem cell research, flag-burning and gay marriage—Democrats prevail by their biggest margin in the entire poll: 51 to 37.
  • Only a basement bottom 29 percent say they will definitely or probably vote to re-elect their incumbent representative and 46 percent say they're committed to someone else.
The tide is turning our way but it could always use a little extra "omph" to make sure things stay that way. Write a letter to the editor , contibute online or sign up as a volunteer with a great candidate like Bob Johnson, or contribute online to the Working Families Party's Take Back Congress Fund.

New York has voted against the Bush regime in 2000 and 2004, and they are ready to do it again in 2006. Elliot Spitzer will be at the top of the Democratic Ticket this year and some polls have him almost 50 points ahead of the competition. When the unpopularity of Bush in this state collides with the Spitzer/Clinton landslide the conditions are ripe for a perfect storm that will sweep seven or more of the rubber-stamp Bush Republicans out of Congress.

The best way to ensure a Democratic Congress in 2006 is to invest in New York State’s Democratic Congressional candidates in races where they can capture Republican held seats via the Working Families Party's Take Back Congress Fund.

The only way to block the radical NeoCon schemes of Bush and his cronies in Congress is to elect a Democratic majority in 2006. If we win in the Working Families Party endorsed congressional races we will be halfway toward the 15 seats we need. The time has come to take our country back and gain freedom from the Bush regime. New York State is the gateway to that freedom in 2006.

Together, America Can Do Better!

Bob Johnson Will Stand Against Bush

Unfortunately federal judge Matthew F. Kennelly did not stand up to the Bush administration's prying ears and AT&T's apparently total compliance.

A previous ruling against AT&T by a federal judge will proceed, but with efforts in the Senate to legitimise the Bush snooping with little oversight it seems dark days are ahead for those who would advocate for freedom in this government twisted by terror.

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."
- Benjamin Franklin

Bob Johnson, the Working Families Party endorsed Democrat in the 23rd Congressional District of New York, blogged about his understandable reservations on the creepy domestic spying programs of the Bush administration on Daily Kos.

I'm Bob Johnson, I'm running for Congress in New York, and I'm going to make this an issue. It's far too important to just let all this slide, give amnesty for past actions and suggest the Bush Administration get approval from a court, as Arlen Specter has proposed. We have to lead on this, we as Democratic office-seekers and -holders, and we as committed activists who care about our country...

...I feel pretty alone on this issue. Prominent Democrats just aren't talking about it, and there's a virtual news blackout on the issue now. Unlike some other issues--stem cells are a pretty good example--I can't depend on any other voice reinforcing what I'm saying. But that doesn't mean I can remain silent. As I said before, I'm not going to be intimidated by Al Qaeda into giving up my Constitutional liberties, and I'm not going to be intimidated by the GOP into remaining silent about it...

Well, Bob speaks for me on this issue and we really need someone to speak for us. Our current Congressman certainly isn't speaking for average North Country folks, he got an "F" from the Drum Major Institute, a organization that tracks lawmakers attention to middle-class issues (thanks to Danger Democrats! for the info). McHugh also has no problem with the intrusions on our liberty by the Bush administration, or their radical foreign agenda.

Bob Johnson will stand up for us in Congress, but he can only get there if we stand up for him. There will be a House Party for the Johnson for Congress campaign in Cadyville, NY on Friday (Jul 28 6PM). Please RSVP on DFA-Link and stop by to show your support. Also you can contribute online, and sign up as a volunteer.

The time has come to stop this imperial Presidency and Take Back Congress for the people from the rubber-stamp Bush Republicans, before they take the right to vote away too.

Spending Caps or Graduation Caps?

Education is the key to our future, you hear politicians say it all the time. The question is, which ones really mean it, and which ones don't really care about our future?

Republican John Faso, running (way behind) for Governor, wants to put a cap on funding increases for our schools. Faso also wants to take desperately needed funds from our most vulnerable school systems to give to corporate run education centers with little real accountability a.k.a. "Charter Schools."

Republican Janet Duprey, running for Assembly against Democrat Andrew Brockway, has yet to publicly articulate a clear position on this issue, but she has advocated for a cap on state spending.

"It's unconscionable for state representatives to suggest that local governments should be capped at a certain percentage without capping state spending at the same time." - Duprey

She has yet to explain how the state could continue to help fund local education programs with such caps in place. We all want the state's spending to be reasonable, but are arbitrary caps the answer?

If such caps where put in place and local schools needed assistance, but could not count on the state to make up the difference, they would be forced to lower the quality of education they provide. Perhaps if Republicans Duprey and Faso got their way the "failing" schools could be sold to the highest bidder so companies with their own private agendas could mold the minds of all our children.

Unlike the cap-happy Republicans, the Working Families Party endorsed Democrats Elliot Spitzer and Andy Brockway want real solutions for education. Elliot's tax plan would offer relief to overburdened tax-payers, without limiting our schools from raising needed funds. Any such increases would need to be approved by taxpayers anyway, and arbitrary caps do not take into account local conditions.

Andy thinks the state should fully fund our public schools, and he supports the Assembly's vote to restore money to the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) over Republican Governor Pataki's veto.

Spitzer and Brockway have offered real solutions instead of the empty Republican rhetoric of spending caps. They realize that to provide a bright future for our state the only cap we should be supporting are graduation caps.

Please voice your support for the real solutions our state needs by donating $26 dollars to Andrew Brockway's campaign for the Assembly in 2006. With Andy in the Assembly more North Country students will be able to wear graduation caps in the future.

Republican Congressman Says Bush Should Be Removed from Office
By David Swanson, OpEdnews.com
A radio show reported yesterday that Republican Texas Congressman Ron Paul said the following:
"I would have trouble arguing that he's been a Constitutional President, and once you violate the Constitution and be proven to do that I think these people should be removed from office."

New York - Republican's Waterloo in 2006

As the Spitzer tidal wave combines with the "Throw the Republi-bums Out" mood of the nation, New York is shaping up to be the critical battleground in election 2006.

Unfortunately NY state isn't yet getting the national attention it deserves in my opinion. I don't think people outside of New York quite get how high of a Democratic wave is approaching on the New York horizon.

Take a look at the numbers from the most recent WNBC/Marist Poll:
In NY-23 Bob Johnson has been reaching out to the online community. With the right amount of attention and money this race could very well shift into the realm of possibility.

Bob Johnson's opponent, Neo-Con Republican John McHugh, voted with Bush on the Stem Cell research bill and this should be a factor in the election as well. Unlike McHugh, many Republicans in Congress joined with almost all the Democrats to get this bill passed. In a stunning display of ignorance, Bush used his first and only veto in five years as President against a bill sixty percent of Americans support! This completely unacceptable vote by McHugh and arrogant veto by Bush will deny hope to millions of Americans looking for help with life-threatening diseases and injuries.

In an effort to boost the rising blue tide the
Working Families Party is pledging to double contributions made to the Working Families Party's Take Back Congress -- New York Federal Committee.

Every $1 you give will translate into $2, so your $20.06 donation - for victory in 2006! - becomes $40 and a $50 donation from you becomes $100 that we can spend to elect Democratic-Working Families Congressional nominees in target districts.

Donate now to Take Back Congress and your donation will be effectively doubled.

Donate now: http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/support/

Polls show Republican incumbents across the country and here in New York are losing support. Eliot Spitzer and Hillary Rodham Clinton are headed to overwhelming victories that will give the Congressional candidates on the ballot with them a boost on election day. But the election is less than 120 days away, and you can be sure that Karl Rove and the Republican incumbents will not leave quietly. They will do whatever they can - including some nasty, dirty campaigning - to hold on.

Some relevant history. In 2002, votes on the WFP ballot line were the margin of victory when Tim Bishop beat Republican Congressman Felix Grucci in Suffolk. In 2004, we did it again with Brian Higgins in Buffalo. In 2006, Bush is more unpopular than he's ever been - and more Republican-held seats are facing serious challengers. This is the chance we've been waiting for.

The past six years of George W. Bush have been bad, even disastrous, for our country and the world. Bush is in office until 2008, but we don't want him to have two more years to inflict more damage. We need to Take Back Congress and put an early end to the Bush Presidency.

Let's seize this opportunity - make a donation today.

Also
National Journal has bumped up the ranking for some of the New York House races.

On a side note there is an interesting dynamic going on in the
WNBC/Marist Poll for the state-level races beyond just the Governor race that could bode well for Tim Merrick running for State Senate, and Andy Brockway running for State Assembly.

Apocalypse, Wow! - GOP Hypes World War III

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein
If you want to feel like you are entering the "Twilight Zone" just tune your TV to the Republican propaganda channel, Fox Faux News. Day and night their cadre of Republican sycophants spew the vile GOP talking points and promote a dangerous radical foreign agenda.

Of course it doesn't stop there, disgraced former Republican House of Representatives Majority Leader Newt Gingrich - not to be confused with the other disgraced former Republican House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay - has been on a campaign of fear all over the media in a desperate attempt to save the precarious Republican majority in Congress. According to Newt, WWIII has begun in the Middle East, and he loves it.
There is a political element to his talk of World War III. Gingrich said that public opinion can change "the minute you use the language" of World War III. - The Seattle Times
While this macabre obsession with widening the war in the Middle-East may have an effect on public opinion, it will likely only solidify the growing strength of the Democrats. Anyone who lived though the Cold War remembers the term "World War III" as another way of referring to nuclear Apocalypse.

Does Newt really think a majority of Americans want a massive war that would result in the death of millions for questionable political gain? Are the Republicans willing to drag America into another war to hold on to the control of Congress?
Gingrich said he is "very worried" about Republicans facing fall elections and says the party must have the "nerve" to nationalize the elections... - The Seattle Times
Newt should be very worried about the Republican's majority, the Democrats are poised to gain seats around the country, especially in NY. It is truly sad that Republicans are so desperate that they are willing to sacrifice the lives of millions to keep their strangle-hold on our government.

I may be putting too much trust in the American public, but I feel that the people won't fall for this any longer. We have been slowly waking from the nightmare of Republican spin we have fallen under since 9/11 and the Iraq War propaganda campaign. We are sick of the Bush Doctrine of permanent war as we watch it fail around the globe.

Right now Iraq is in a state of complete anarchy and Afghanistan continues to worsen, yet Israel is using the Bush Doctrine to attack Lebanon - and perhaps even Iran eventually. All with the tacit approval of Bush and his Republican cronies in Congress.

There are similarities between this course of events and a previous World War - but not in the way Republicans are frantically trying to frame it.
The killing of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire produced widespread shock across Europe and there was initially much sympathy for the Austrian position. The Government in Vienna saw this as an opportunity to settle the perceived threat from Serbia once and for all. After ascertaining that they could count on support from Imperial Germany, Austria-Hungary blamed the government of Serbia for the assassination and issued a harsh set of demands, which was known as the July Ultimatum. Austria-Hungary insisted that Serbia had to accept all of the conditions which included provisions that would have impacted on Serbian sovereignty. Caught between the external threat and their own extremist groups the Serbian Government accepted all the demands made except that Austrian investigators be permitted to undertake enquiries into the assassination on Serbian soil. Austria-Hungary then declared war on July 28, 1914. The system of interlocking alliances and treaties then in force led the great powers of Europe into World War I after a month of diplomatic maneuvering. - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Replace the assassination of Austria-Hungary's Arch-Duke by the Serbian terrorists with the kidnapping and murders of Israeli soldiers by the Lebanese terrorists and you arrive in a very disturbing scenario. Newt and other Republicans like him want to cast the United States in the role of Imperial Germany.

The Republicans in the federal Government salivate at the idea of the US being pulled into the conflict, and they rub their hands in cold anticipation of sacrificing our brave soldiers to a world war based on cultish Neo-Conservative philosophy.

The Democrats want to protect Americans at home and lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens, and our allies.

"You know, people say the Republicans are tough on defense. How can you be tough on defense if five years after 9/11, Osama bin Laden is still at large, the Iranians are about to get nuclear weapons, North Korea's quadrupled their nuclear weapons stash..."
"“We've lost the high moral high ground everywhere in the world. We want to be respected around the world again."
"We want our moral authority to be restored, because part of defending America is not just well-armed troops; it's having the high moral ground."”
"If you think what's going on in the Middle East today would be going on if the Democrats were in control, it wouldn't, because we would have worked day after day after day to make sure we didn't get where we are today. We would have had the moral authority that Bill Clinton had when he brought together the Northern Irish and the IRA, when he brought together the Israelis and the Palestinians."” - DNC Chairman Howard Dean at DemocracyFest 2006
The choice we face as a nation could not be more clear this November 7, 2006.

Bob Johnson second quarter fundraising numbers

This post is part of a larger effort by local bloggers across the state to cover New York's Congressional races and the release of the second quarter fundraising numbers today.

Working Families Party endorsed Democrat Bob Johnson has a steep hill to climb to unseat right-wing Republican John McHugh, as was evidenced by the second quarter fundraising totals released today. That said, the campaign for the largest congressional district east of the Missippi is starting to heat up.

The biggest obstacle Bob faces is the fact that few people are really paying attention to McHugh and his record. Bob Johnson shares the values of most New Yorkers, John McHugh does not. McHugh is given a pass by many because of token throw-away votes on pro-labor positions that unfortunately lacked support in Congress, and his long incumbency (though some - myself included - consider that more of a liability).
McHugh voted with President Bush 82% of the time, voted the GOP party line 91% of the time, and he voted with disgraced former House leader Tom DeLay 88% of the time (through 3/31/2006).

Bob Johnson has raised $69,157 for the year with $9,030 cash on hand while his Bush-Republican opponent McHugh has raised $333,746, mostly from out-of-state PACs, and has $385,381 on hand. McHugh has only raised a tiny portion of his campaign spoils from individuals ($68,200). The fact that he has spent little of his overall funds is not really surprising as McHugh prefers to use tax-payer funded mailings to do his campaigning, so he can use his campaign funds to boost his Republican cronies - including $1,000 to Cheney's buddy Ray Meier.

McHugh acts as a conduit from the PACs to the Congressional Republicans, something some of those PACs should consider carefully if they think about contributing to him from now on - he has contributed
$25,000.00 to the National Republican Congressional Committee!

More data on the district:
  • Status: Republican incumbent John McHugh seeking his 7th Term
  • Voter registration: Republican - 183,916 (44.30%), Democratic - 121,566 (29.28%), Other -109,691 (26.42%)
  • 2004 Presidential vote: BUSH 51.03% , KERRY 46.86%
  • 2004 House vote: John McHugh (R) 71% def. Bob Johnson(D) 29%
  • 2006 fundraising totals: Johnson $69,157, McHugh $333,746
  • 2006 cash on hand: Johnson $9,030, McHugh $385,381

The Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party

Fellow New York blogger, Carl, posted recently about the current struggle for control of the Democratic Party on his blog Simply Left Behind. He incorrectly, in my opinion, claimed the struggle was between the Dean Wing and the (Hillary) Clinton Wing and stated it was a problem that Dean had won the DNC Chairmanship. He plans to expand on his post in the future, and has yet to explain why Dean was a bad choice.

I felt the need to respond to what he did write so far:

I am eagerly awaiting your reasoning as to why Dean was a bad choice for DNC chair, in my opinion he was the best possible choice. His 50-State Strategy will bring our party back to life, and his influence inspired hundreds of new Democrats across the country that will be essential if this party is to have any future. If the DSCC and the DCCC would just follow his lead we would be a lot better off then we are now. When we do win in November it will be because of Dean's efforts to rebuild the party from the bottom up, the only way we will lose is if the other Party leaders continue to get in his way.

Hillary Clinton is not the problem, she is staying out of the fight between the wings of the parties, if you look at her response to the Lamont/Lieberman race vs DSCC Schumer's response there is a clear difference. Schumer and Emanuel represent the old school, Dean is the new school, and Hillary is waiting to see who wins. It is not just an ideological divide - though that is part of it. It is much more about running this campaign like all the previous failing ones (Schumer & Emanuel) and taking a fresh perspective based on what the rank and file members of the party actually want (Dean).

As I have stated above and previously I have a lot of problems with DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel's strategy but I don't want to be completely negative. They have an excellent page on John McHugh's record of selling-out the North Country, and they recently released an outstanding video that very effectively showed the failures of the Republicans and the Democratic hope for the future.

Unfortunately they bowed to Republican pressure and pulled down the ad, but you can still watch it in case you missed it.

Support Our Troops - Fire the Government

I have been thinking a lot lately about the heroes that serve the United States in the military. Unfortunately our Republican controlled government has been failing them, but the vast majority of them still carry on day after day with honor and courage.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you about one of them that I am especially proud of, my cousin, Jim Stewart.
Jim is a US Marine currently in Iraq, and even though I oppose the Iraq war, I am 100% in support of him and those who serve with him.

One of the main reasons I speak out so strongly against this war is I hope to see him - and the rest of our troops - return home safely.

Plattsburgh, NY, Marine risks life to save injured truck driver

By Cpl. Lucian Friel, 2nd Marine Division

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (June 15, 2006) -- Marines are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are expected to be ready for any situation that is thrown their way.

One Plattsburgh, NY, native, is living proof of this.

Lance Cpl. James A. Stewart, 20, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic actions while serving as recruiter's assistant in his home state.

The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is awarded to service members who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy.

On Jan. 3, 2005, Stewart was at the scene of a serious accident on New York Interstate 87, where a fuel tanker truck rammed into the back end of a parked tractor-trailer.

Stewart saw no other witnesses were reacting, so at great risk to himself, he approached the truck with the engine engulfed in flames and about to consume the cab.

The surrounding flames shot over 20 feet into the air and according to Stewart, the heat was so intense he and another Marine with him had to use their hands to shield their faces.

They quickly pried open the door to find an unconscious, severely injured driver trapped by a jammed seat belt latch.

"“The only thing I could think about was getting the driver out alive,"” explained the 2004 Beekmantown High School graduate.

They worked within the smoke-filled cab with the assistance of another truck driver who cut the seat belt. Moments before the cab was completely overtaken by flames, they pulled the injured man to safety.

Stewart, a Marine with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, received the medal from Maj. Gen. Richard A. Huck, the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division.

The upstate New Yorker was honored and humbled to receive the award.

"“It'’s an honor to receive this award,"” he said. "I didn't expect this. I was just doing my duty as a Marine and as a person."

US Army Dumps Halliburton Chumps

Apparently the US Army has decided to end its no bid relationship with "Deadeye" Dick Cheney's Halliburton. As I mentioned in my last post our soon-to-be-former Congressman John McHugh voted to continue Halliburton's exclusive control of soldier services in Iraq even after they have been shown to be stealing from our soldiers.

The Army's decision is a good start but it certainly won't turn things around if we continue with the Republican "Stay the Course" policy in Iraq. While Bush and McHugh condemn our troops to be caught in the middle of Iraq's Civil War our occupation in Iraq continues to swell the ranks of Al Queda.

Is it November yet? My finger is twitching in anticipation to pull the lever for our next Congressman Bob Johnson.

Dear John...

I recently got a slick little taxpayer-funded mailing from John McHugh trumpeting his votes to extend the Republican tax giveaway to the rich. Obviously McHugh is getting a little worried about his strong Democratic and Working Families challenger Bob Johnson, and McHugh should be, but why didn't John want to promote his other votes in the congress?

McHugh recently voted to support an open ended policy in Iraq, while also voting against expanding healthcare for our troops and voting in favor of awarding contracts to Haliburton after they where shown to be fleecing the military for millions.

While gas prices spiral out of control John McHugh voted to give the oil industry billions and voted against cracking down on their price gouging. This just goes to show the $13,035 they gave him has been a smart investment for them.

The time has come for the voters of the 23rd Congressional district to give our "representative" a "Dear John" letter, and get a REAL representative that shares our values, Bob Johnson.

Mayor Jack Stewart and future Mayor Kevin Duniho

I want to congratulate Jack Stewart on becoming the interim Mayor of Plattsburgh until the new Mayor is elected in a special election on November 7, 2006. Kevin Duniho is in the running for Mayor of Plattsburgh and I want to take this opportunity to declare my support for his campaign to bring "Vision in Action" to the lake city.

Progress and Politics

A recent blog post by Steve Perez made me consider the future of the election of 2006 and beyond. Steve asked the question "What would you ask Schumer and Emanuel?"
I would ask them to work more closely with Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean. Dean's 50-State strategy will give us victory now, AND in the years to come. This will benefit us tremendously by building a progressive infrastructure to counter the right-wing noise machine around the nation. It was the first progressive movement that turned back the tide against greed and put this nation on a path to social justice. The Neo Robber Barons of the 21st century have been peeling away the gains made by the movements for labor and social justice and weakening our defenses with a radical international agenda.

...ah guess I was supposed to ask a question somewhere in there right?

...ok

"How will you better combine your efforts with Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean to unite the public in a return to greatness for this nation and regain control of our Congress in November?"

I have at times been strongly critical of some of the actions of both these men, but at the same time I know that we share a common goal. This nation stands at a critical crossroads that no one should underestimate. Will we tell the children of the future that we had this chance to make a difference in our world and stop the Bush rubber-stamp congress, and didn't?

Will we tell them:

I had the power to slow down or stop global warming by electing a congress that worked to preserve our world, but the game was on TV...

I had the power to ensure our civil rights and constitution was protected by electing a Congress committed to open government, but I forgot it was election day... (NOVEMBER 7 2006!)

I had the power to defend America by electing a more honest congress not beholden to a radical foreign policy agenda of a failed President, but I just don't vote...

?

You have the power, now stand up and use it.

Volunteer for a progressive political campaign, speak out for real American values, and vote for candidates that will bring a new direction for America - in the Democratic Primary (September 12) and with Row E on November 7!

Working Families Endorses the North Country's Winning Team!

The final 2006 endorsements have been released and the North Country's Working Families Team is ready to sweep the fall elections! It is a strong team of progressive pioneers stepping up to take our country back for the people!

Vote Row E for Elliot!

Elliot Spitzer for New York Governor
If we are to reverse our state’s decline, we must first reform our state government to make it more accountable and more responsive to people’s needs. We must renew people’s faith in government by making sure our tax money is spent wisely, efficiently and where it is needed most.

Hillary Clinton for U.S. Senate
I am very proud that Democrats are standing up for the idea of linking a Congressional pay raise to increasing the minimum wage, and I urge Republicans to join us, and I urge people around our country to make their voices heard on this.

Bob Johnson for U.S. Congress (NY-23)
We are on the right side of the issues - whether it's healthcare for every single American, stewardship of our environment, a sound energy policy, our commitment to both K-12 and higher education, meaningful job creation or changing the course in Iraq. Good government is not the enemy. Those in power today openly detest government and have created incompetent, inept government. We need to bring back integrity and competence to public life.

Tim Merrick for State Senate (SD-45)
Big business and the wealthy have been given protection and tax relief and the burden of funding this increasingly expensive country has fallen to middle and working class Americans. This must change. Taxes must be equitable for all, without loopholes for the wealthy. Large businesses must step up to a level of community accountability in living wages, environmental stewardship and equal rights.

Andy Brockway for State Assembly (AD-114)
I don't believe it falls under the auspices of government to regulate personal lives of our citizens. Education has been left without adequate funding for years and I believe in order to retain our status as a global player, we need to start increasing funding allocated to elementary and secondary education. I believe it is the responsibility of the government to eliminate long-standing debt and the current trend of securing loans from foreign nations.

On this July 4 weekend show your true patriot colors and donate to the progressive pioneer of your choice from the North Country Working Families Party. The campaigns of Bob Johnson, Tim Merrick, and Andy Brockway especially need your donations as they are facing tough election fights, but working together, WE WILL WIN!
